Cold Prey-2006

3 out of 5 screams

I dont know why, but when I see that a horror movie is foreign, for some untold reason, I equate that with being refined. I know that other countries churn out the same tired bullshit that we do in America. However, I seem to sub-conscientiously think that being foreign adds character, and class.

Luckily, Im slowing getting over that habit.

Theres nothing wrong with Cold Prey.  But then again, theres nothing special about it either. Its touted as being “the best horror flick to ever come out of Norway!”.

I can see where people may say that (especially Norwegians). It really is a well done film.

Lets get to the good: The movie has a very polished vibe about it. It has some great shots that are almost Kubrick-esque. These wide angles build tension, and the setting ( an old ski lodge) is almost a character in itself.

The acting is also very good. These are a believable group of friends. Theres a color filter on the lens that gives everything an “old” look. This movie looks as good as anything Hollywood would put out.

But theres also the bad: The gripe I have with this movie, is that it could literally be the next “I know what you did last summer”. The plot is predictable, and unlike those other movies (Scream, IKWYDLS, Urban Legend) this film is completely devoid of any real plot twists. Good looking group of friends gets lost, one is injured. They end up at the wrong place, at the wrong time.

The person you think thats going to die?

They die.

The person that will be the leader?

Its exactly the character you suspect.

Who is the killer?

You know from the beginning.

This is the first of a series. I have part two, so you can expect a review. If you see this one on netflix, its worth the watch. Its a well crafted horror flick. It just doesnt tread any new ground.
